Muir Woods Day Trip

Muir Woods In A Day

September 8, 2022

Reserve Parking at park(requirement

You must reserve parking at Muir Woods. This is not a place you can just roll up and see what’s going on. You can do so here.

Timing

Depending on whether you plan on hitting the trails, and if so which ones, for hiking I would say at least plan on Muir Woods itself being a half day trip, at the very least. You can head out first thing in the morning via rental car or guided tour bus and mosey around for a few hours. have a snack and leave.

Best time to go? I say early morning. If you want to go in the afternoon, you can always plan to leave before sunset so you can catch it at Muir Woods Beach.

Another FYI: The roads in this area are windy and dark at night, drive at a pace comfortable for you on your way back to the city, pull over if you see a local following close behind so they can zoom by you.

Car Rental

You can easily book yourself onto a giant tour bus with a hundred other tourists and get carried to and from the city to the park. I don’t recommend this.

You want freedom, you want to drive yourself over the Golden Gate Bridge, you want to have the freedom to roll down the windows, enjoy the swirly hilly narrow roads. For around $50 and one of the most convenient reservations and locations of a rental car I have ever had I suggest you head to City Rent A Car. It took all of 10 minutes to sign papers and hop into my whip for the day.

Different trails

There are 6 miles of hiking trails through the park that are broken up into different loops. These l trails range from a 30 minute loop to a 90 minute loop. In the park the trails are pavement or wooded boardwalk style.

The longer, more rugged, trails that reach out into the surrounding Mount Tamalpais State Park, if you are interested in spending the day hiking around and catching a view of Tamalpais Mountain and San Francisco itself. Learn more about  this park here.

Either way, prepare for quiet time, awe, and gratitude.

Prepare to spend a few hours here.

And prepare to walk, walk, walk.

Outside Muir Woods

Leave and drive to Muir beach. I have been here twice and never seen the  parking lot even half full. with the flog rolling in and the back road type feel, I’m not sure many tourists hit tis spot. Which makes it a favorite of mine.

get lost, lsing service on my phone, and having no maps lead me up to Stinson beach. A small beach town that was completely jam packed with people either getting out of the city for the day or looking for something to do after Muir Woods

Either way its sweet little Cali coastal town and I highly recommend a visits. Prepare for the traffic, there is only one way in and out, very limited parking and a lt of hills.
